The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!
I’m sorry to shout but it had to be done.
I heard about this from Twitter after someone received a proof copy. I was drawn as ever to the gorgeous cover and so intrigued that I cheekily asked for a copy myself. Abacus books and Emily Burns were sweethearts and said yes. It turned up two days later and i fell in love.
It has the coolest double cover i have ever seen for starters. I didnt know what to expect as there is no sample anywhere so it was a leap of faith but from the first few pages i knew i’d be reading to the end. I devoured this in two days flat because to find myself with free time and not to be sharing it with A.J. Fikry would have been a terrible waste of my life.
Okay i’m being melodramatic but it really is THAT GOOD!
A.J. Fikry is the owner of Island Books. He has recently been widowed and as a fairly youngish man still is slowly trying to ruin his business and drink himself to death. Something magical happens which turns his life on its head and saves him.
I adored A.J. from the first page to the last. A gentle, intelligent, nerdy, philosophical, slightly aloof but very loveable man. I warmed to him right away as i did with most of the characters in this book. All beautifully rounded and well written.
It has wit, drama, suspense and buckets of charm. Being set in a bookshop there are so many quotes from real books and authors with a few in jokes that made me laugh. With the worry of so many independent bookshops closing this should be read by everyone and then we would all want to keep places like Island Books open forever.
This is the perfect winter book read, snuggled up in a comfy chair by a roaring fire you will find yourself flying through it in one sitting. But whatever the time and place just make time for this book.
